A-level subjects

Hurtwood prepares students in 20 A-level subjects. The curriculum combines traditional academic studies with more contemporary subjects. The potential artist, linguist, scientist, philosopher, lawyer, actor or captain of industry – each is well catered for and each is equally valued.

The school understands that in the 21st century the ever-evolving demands of industry and the ever-widening choice of careers drive a changing requirement for qualifications. Thus, while subjects like maths, english, and modern languages are still central to a well-balanced academic portfolio, the trend towards "real life" disciplines such as accountancy, law, business and media studies is acknowledged and well provided for.

Moreover, because individual students have individual requirements, Hurtwood makes no constraints as to how subjects might be combined. In effect, every course of study is "tailor made", which enables Hurtwood students to select a programme which reflects their personal strengths and passions and puts them on the first step of the journey towards the realisation of their aspirations and dreams.

Certainly, Hurtwood students achieve results at the end of the day that allow them to realise their ambitions. Examination success is a crucial part of this journey and Hurtwood has an enviable record of achieving grades that consistently place the school high up in the league tables in a position described by the Financial Times as "among the cream of the country’s best schools".
